Hydrogen Peroxide Erythrocytes Hemolysis Test and Neonatal Obstructive Jaundice

Abstract
Among the prolonged jaundice in the newborn infants, neonatal hepatitis and biliary atresia are the most common causes of obstructive jaundice. But the differential diagnosis between above two diseases is difficult some times clinically and simple liver function tests.
Lubin et al. of Boston (1971) has introduced a new helpful method for the differentiation of two diseases as HA erythrocytes hemolysis test. Authors applied above new method to few cases of neonatal obstructive jaundice and compared with histologic findings from needle biopsy specimen.
During 1963 to 1973, 20 cases of neonatal obstructive jaundice patients (16 neonatal hepatitis and 4 biliary atresia) have admitted to Severance Hospital which were confirmed by open cholangiogram and needle biopsy. Among above 20 cases, two cases of twin babies who were diagnosed as neonatal hepatitis but remained healthy halves of the twin babies showed also abnormal liver function tests which suspected latent neonatal hepatitis and evidence of intrauterine infection theory.
New method, HA erythrocytes hemolysis test was simple and very helpful in the dfferentiation between the neonatal hepatitis and the biliary atresia.
